Andrea Tafi attacks more times than a trigger-happy soldier and claims victory at the 86th edition of Belgium's most famous race. American George Hincapie had vowed to win; his famous team captain, Lance Armstrong -- riding Flanders the first time in years -- had vowed to help him. With a roadside audience in the thousands, Hincapie takes on the biggest names of the sport in a battle spread over 16 climbs, sprinkled around the Flanders roads at strength-sapping intervals that get shorter as the finish gets closer. With five climbs and 35 km to race, a leading group of riders forms, including race favorites Hincapie, Van Petegem, and Museeuw. Tafi and his Mapei teammates attack again and again, but Museeuw, Hincapie and Van Petegem keep pulling him back. On the Muur of Geraardsbergen, Johan Museeuw attacks and shatters the group, provoking a counter by Tafi and Van Petegem -- who lead over the top of the climb with Hincapie just behind. After another regrouping with only one climb to go, Museeuw attacks but is countered, and with 4km to go Tafi launches a massive attack that leaves Hincapie, Museeuw and Van Petegem looking at each other and realizing they will now be simply battling for a place on the podium. Museeuw beats Van Petegem in the sprint, and George Hincapie finishes an impressive fourth. What a race, what a finish and what a win for the 35 year-old Tuscan!
